The Ancient Monastery of the Virgin Mary in Al Quseir
Ancient Monasteries are those places crowned by Egyptian hands, and the best witness to the greatness and perpetuation of the Coptic heritage, and are always the focus of attention for many of the fans of Coptic art; some beauty has been immortalized for generations to come and its imprint of an ancient Coptic history. After passing a century (100 years) a monastery is considered among antiquities. Imagine, my dear reader, a monastery from the first centuries that has passed by thousands of years. The following report takes us on a tour to learn about the features of the monastery.
❗Origin of the monastery
The Holy Family came, with the guidance of the Holy Spirit, to stay and pray for ten days in the cave in Jabal Qusayr al-Amarna in Jabal al-Sharqi in the city of Qusiya, Assiut Governorate, to escape persecution. After that, the cave was neglected, but divine providence wanted to discover it at the hands of Emperor Constantine and Queen Helena, so they made some reforms in the place and returned to his old glory, and then it soon disappeared again.
❗Discovery of the monastery
In the early eighteenth century, Father Abd al-Malak was in charge of visiting people (to encourage them to come to the church) and conducting religious rites for the people of Qusayr. Some told him that there was something strange, which is that when some shepherds rested in one of the caves that they had not entered before, they found a beautiful looking girl with rare fear and awe Then suddenly she expelled them from the cave, and the people ask the priest to explain the matter.
After hearing the story, he informed them that the beautiful-looking girl is the Virgin Mary, and that the cave is a sacred place, so she expelled them so that he would not be grazing for the sheep, and when the people heard this, especially the elderly, they said this is not a strange thing because they heard from their grandparents that there is his church in the name of the Virgin Mary. Father Abdel Malak gathered a group of Coptic and Islamic people and went to see the cave.
❗Description of the monastery
Upon their arrival, they found a church with an altar in the middle of a carved structure in the mountain, and on it a stone candlestick and a crucifix of ebony wood, and some archaeological icons of the Virgin Mary and a picture of the crucifixion and the Resurrection, and they found some church tools and a baptism carved in the mountain with a bathtub to sanctify the water of the stems, and all this and other indications that It proved to them that the place is his church in the name of the Virgin Mary.
They were very happy to discover the place and asked God for another sign to increase their assertion, so they said that if the Virgin Mary wanted to rebuild the place she would prevent father Abdel Malak from crossing the river, and when he boarded the boat, it did not take off from the shore and they tried 3 times but no one could push the boat forward.
The people chanted for the beatification of the Virgin Mary, and then Father Abdel Malak went to the father, Archbishop Yousab, Bishop of Kursi Sanbow, Dairout and Qusqam at that time, and asked him to inaugurate the church, He was delighted and accepted the invitation.
❗The inauguration of the church
The bishop attended at the appointed time for the prayer and the inauguration of the church, but the strange thing was when he arrived to the church he held the mass prayer without having it inaugurated, so the priest was surprised and asked him about the secret of that. Then Pope Yousab replied with great joy that the Virgin Mary had come to him in a vision and told him not to inaugurate the church, because it is sanctified by the advent of the Child Jesus for ten days.
❗The Present form of the monastery
The monastery is located on the eastern bank of the Nile, and according to what was mentioned in the book "The Old Churches and Monasteries", that the church is carved into the rock and its structure takes a circular shape. It is adorned with niches on the circular perimeter. A stone is also found on the northern side of the structure, and the courtyard is divided into two parts (a choir) by meansofBuilding wall.
And the place became a sacred place and a cause of blessing for many, and miracles followed it through the intercession of the Virgin Mary, and many visitors visited to receive the blessi
